Accounting Software for Electricians

Same deciding question as every trade: does the books software talk to your field software? The five options below are priced from their own pages (checked September 7, 2026); the sync facts come from the field vendors' own pages.

Accounting software for an electrical shop: the short version

  • Running field software?QuickBooks Online syncs with all ten platforms we track, including every one with an electrical page. Job costing needs the Plus tier ($140/mo).
  • On QuickBooks Desktop? ServiceTitan's electrical page names Desktop Premier and Enterprise support explicitly; Housecall Pro, FieldEdge, Service Fusion, FieldPulse and ServiceBox sync with Desktop too. Jobber and Workiz don't. And since Intuit stopped selling new Pro and Premier subscriptions in September 2024, Enterprise is the only Desktop product a new buyer can get.
  • T&M billing and progress work: the job-costing row in the tiles below is where the five differ most; Wave's pricing page doesn't list it, and Xero and FreshBooks gate it behind their upper tiers.
  • Solo, no field software: Wave free, or FreshBooks from $23/mo; neither connects to any field platform we track.

Electrical job costing: which software actually tracks it

T&M work and progress-billed projects live or die on job costing, and it sits in two places. In the books, QuickBooks Online tracks project profitability from the Plus tier ($140/mo) up; Desktop Enterprise names job cost tracking "from labor and materials to deadlines and change orders"; Xero gates it to its Established tier and FreshBooks to Premium and Select; Wave's pricing page lists no project or job costing feature.

The finer numbers come from the field software, where the hours and the material get logged. On their own pages (checked September 14, 2026), Jobber calculates profitability per job from labor, materials and tracked costs; Housecall Pro tracks labor, commissions and materials with the margin updating as costs are added; ServiceTitan books time to cost codes and names job costing for commercial electrical; ServiceBox ties labor, materials, purchases and expenses to the work order; QuoteIQ shows per-job profit in real time; FieldPulse reports job revenue against expenses; FieldEdge names job-level profitability without detail. Workiz links expenses to jobs. Kickserv and Service Fusion make no job-costing claim.

The practical read: if per-job margins matter, pick them in the field software and let the books receive the totals. The QuickBooks Plus tier only earns its price if you want the ledger itself to hold the per-job view.

Accounting software questions from electrical shops

Which electrical contractor software works with QuickBooks?
All ten field platforms we track sync with QuickBooks Online. Six work with QuickBooks Desktop: Housecall Pro, FieldEdge, Service Fusion, FieldPulse and ServiceBox natively, and Kickserv as a $50/mo add-on. ServiceTitan names Desktop Premier and Enterprise on its electrical page but leaves the sync depth unconfirmed; Jobber and Workiz do not sync with Desktop.

Does QuickBooks do job costing for electricians?
QuickBooks Online tracks project profitability on the Plus tier and up, $140/mo. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise has job costing built in. For T&M and progress-billed work, the field software usually holds the finer per-job numbers and QuickBooks receives the totals.

Do electricians need special accounting software?
No. The electrical-specific layer is the field software: estimating, dispatch, multi-day project scheduling. The books are generic, and the fact that decides the accounting choice is whether it syncs with the field platform you run.

What is the cheapest accounting software for a solo electrician?
Wave is free on its Starter plan, FreshBooks starts at $23/mo and Xero at $25/mo. Wave and FreshBooks connect to no field platform we track, and Xero only reaches Jobber, one-way, on the Connect plan or higher, so the cheapest choice holds until the day you add field software.

The full field-platform sync matrix lives on the contractor accounting guide; the vendor facts are identical for electrical shops because sync paths are global, not per-trade.
